Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future by Ashlee Vance
Who’s shaping our future?
It’s the question that surely crossed your mind. When I finished reading Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future by Ashlee Vance, I knew of one person that does it. He is changing our appetite for a more innovative world day by day. You may come to disagree with me but for this you must read the book.
You may start by checking some nuggets (visual quotes from books ) and the book summary below.
INNOVATION / Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future
Colonizing space is Elon Musk’s stated life’s purpose.
His name is Elon Musk. The man wants to colonize Mars. He builds electric cars, rockets, among other things, and works non-stop to fulfill his vision about the future of our planet. Elon is a complex human being who has the privilege of having a unique driven mind.
Do you doubt or admire him?
Can you call him insane or a genius?
I think he’s a little bit of both. Keep in mind that if you want to change the world you must stand out from the crowd. Either way you have to acknowledge his achievements.
Ashlee Vance does exactly that in Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future. The author captures the hardship and the inside workings of building from thin air multiple successful businesses. Also, you have a rare insight into Musk’s family life and his relationships with friends and employees.
The volume is structured in 11 chapters beginning with the meeting between Vance and Musk. At first Elon said ‘no’ to Ashlee’s offer of helping him with the delivering of this book. After months of relentless research and hard to get interviews, Musk gave in. As the writer confesses
“He respects people who continue on after being told no.”
The traits of his character are often seen as unusual. Remember that we all are shaped by occurrences that date from our infancy.
Elon’s no different in this respect, but he created a strong form of defiance in the face of naysayers. His commitment to go all the way, despite of the personal and financial cost, to ensure the achievement of his dream… it’s unbelievable.
In the last chapter of Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future, Vance acknowledges this tendency of Elon:
“What’s fascinating is that Musk remains willing to lose it all.”
He was on the brink to lose it all so many times – and still is. Some time ago, Musk almost lost all of his fortune, but by divine intervention (not really, but you’ll understand exactly how in the volume) it didn’t happen. The amount of stress that this man is capable of enduring is outlandish. Prepping his next ventures comes natural to him, even with the knowledge of an imminent disaster looming in the distance.
You may wonder…
What’s on the to-do list of Mr. Musk for the next few years?
Well… Let’s have a look:
- Concerning SpaceX, he desires to change the launch process so that the rockets can be refueled, standing up, and fired on their own with computers handling the safety features.
- Also by 2017, SpaceX wants to fly astronauts to the International Space Station for NASA.
- Regarding Tesla, by 2025, it is estimated that could be the leading company in the electric automotive industry.
- By the same year as Tesla, SolarCity that’s in the solar energy trade should be dominating its industry.
These are just a few examples.
Are you already calling it wishful thinking?
You’ll have another opinion once you have put down Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future by Ashlee Vance.
Be warned. I haven’t even scratched the surface. It has plenty of nuggets, in detail back story, and loads of notes. Like. A lot. But don’t run for the hills just yet.
This book is meant to be enjoyed page by page. It’s a roller coaster experience into the depths of commitment of a man who declared that:
“Turning humans into space colonizers is his stated life’s purpose.”
